The 841/851 Pioneer buildings are two of the most recognizable properties in all of Oak Harbor. Together, they comprise approximately 10,000 sq feet of mixed use space located right in the heart of Oldtown. As currently configured, the buildings contain:
3 commercial spaces ranging from 1050 sq ft to 2360 sq feet
3 apartments (studio, 1 BR, and 2 BR)
2 office spaces
History
On the fine Saturday morning of June 22, 1940, the Ernst Apartment building held its Grand Opening celebration. Fred Ernst served free coffee and cake to anyone who wanted to check out Oak Harbor's most modern building.
The building has had many configurations over the years. When it was originally built, the upstairs was configured as two apartments, 4 hotel rooms, and a banquet hall.
Along the way, the building next door at 841 Pioneer was combined with 851 Pioneer to form a pair of buildings totaling about 10,000 sq ft between them.
Modern Era
Eighty years later, the Ernst Apartment building remains a successful mixed-use building at its location in the very center of Oak Harbor's Historic Oldtown neighborhood.
These days, the Ernst Building still has the two upstairs apartments, but the hotel room and banquet hall space was reconfigured into enlarging the apartments and adding two nice office spaces. The upstairs hallway is a private art gallery featuring original artworks by nationally acclaimed artists as well as current and former residents.
The original commercial/retail spaces still exist at street level on Pioneer Way.
